We are currently in Med refitting after lightning strike. We are intending to go down to the Canaries and make an Atlantic crossing late Nov. Our original plan was to do a 'textbook' 3 year cicumnavigation but after our first few months in the med, its been a bit non stop so we are considering adding an extra year once we have crossed the atlantic - otherwise as soon as we've arrived, we have to start heading to Panama etc. Now for the problem, we can think of a few options: 1:Carib for longer and up the ICW overwinter North somewhere 2: Carib for longer, through Panama and up the West coast of US, Overwinter somewhere North (our boat comes from here so nice to take her home. 3:Carib for longer, through Panama and stick round the Pacific Panamanian Islands for a while - not sure how long we can do this safely.
Anyone any thoughts, tips etc for a fun time? Money is, as ever, an issue so if its a very expensive route then its probably not a go-er.
Thanks in advance

What quite few boats seem to do is: - arrive Caribbean December, potter round islands - leave St Martin or VI's May to Bermuda - Bermuda to east coast USA - potter round USA - down the ICW October/November - down the eastern Caribbean to arrive Panama late January
On the other hand there are so many options... Personally I'd just have a rest and potter round the whole Caribbean - east, west, Venezuela, Columbia etc, whatever takes your fancy, there are so many places it would take years to see them all.

Doh everyone keeps saying this about Brasil and it sounds v cool. What would be our route for the year though? Wouldnt we end up in the Caribbean about the time we had to leave it again?

Oops, I meant to say: - down the WESTERN Caribbean to arrive Panama late January.
As mentioned before we didn't go via Brazil but I can imagine: - arrive Brazil December - potter north along Brazil coast and then head up to do a bit of the Caribbean island chain - head back down chain to be Trinidad latitude by July - then along Venezuela, ABC's, Columbia, San Blas islands etc to Panama for late January Not too onerous and lots of different places. If you stop in Venezuela there is lots to do - the Orinoco river, Angel Falls, Los Llanos wetlands, Andes etc. Plus you can fly to Peru (can also do Peru from Columbia). -

Have a look at THIS POST. It even comes with a routing chart that should not be used for navigation.
