How to use the search engine
      #1457660 - 22/05/2007 09:24

This is a definite catch 22 situation - the answer is probably already in a previous post / thread, but I can't find it!

How are we meant to use the search engine:
- How do I search all posts?
(at the moment I set newer than to blank and blank, and older than to 1 day!)
- How do I get more than 200 results - or is that a fixed limit?
- How do I get the results threaded, or is that not possible
(at the moment if I search on 'lifejacket' for example, and the word is used separately 6 times in a thread, each post comes back even though having clicked on the first I will probably read the thread...)
(this is confused even more by the fact that the title of each post found from the thread is not the same necessarily...)
- can I search two disjointed forums
(I can search sections / all / individual forums, but what if I wanted to search scuttlebutt and for sale?)

Is it best to give up and toddle off to Google?

Many thanks.

Go to google and use the site constraint - so if you are looking for 'moody' on the forums you enter:

moody site:ybw.com/forums

and that will constrain results to those from the forums only.

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Thanks Jimmy,

I thought that might be the only route - had hoped that there might be more functionality / usability within the forums...

mind you Google doesn't prevent you from searching twice in rapid succession

This has been a common comment, and one that seemed unanimous for improvement... when the budget allows.

You can search more than one forum though... click on one, then hold CTRL and click on the next, and so on....

I don't think there is any easy answer to your other problems, other than using Google.

what you are looking for just isn't possible with the current search engine. It simply works in measure of one, so search on older than 1 year, newer than 2 years, though you can search across all forums, rather than limiting it to one or a few.

It's worth persevering with for some searches, as google isn't great on anything older than a few months or a year, and won't find some threads from years back, as they are too far back in the history of the forums. So for old threads, the site search is the only option, and you just have to search back a year at a time, or in smaller chunks (more key words) if you get more than two hundred results.

Shame it is so clunky - there is such a wealth of information on this site (often hidden by the humour - but definitely there )
