Spammers
      #1580637 - 15/09/2007 21:21

I see our friend the Nike Trainer Salesman is back. Is it possible to restrict posting on the for sale forum to people who've got a minimum post count, say 50 posts? Or has it already been suggested and discounted?

A good idea: effective, achievable and sensible.

No chance.

All that these idiots will do is to post the minimum required number of posts automatically when they post their spam.

Better idea is to have a spam words filter on the for sale posts and to ban IP adress ranges - we ban IP Address ranges & entire countries from our websites.

If you do a quick Google you will see that these are well known and widely reported spammers.

The idea is that they would get barred by the moderators before they reached the magic number. And is there a way of posting automatically ?

You could just start a new thread and then post 49 replies to yourself on the thread you just created. Instantly reaching 50 posts before a moderator spots you.

Posting automatically is not complex - the posting page is just a page with a form in with a few fields that need populating, this can be created automatically.

I doubt that the spammers actually post manually and just have purpose made code that can be used to post on the commonly used forums. As these spammers are well known and widely reported it is very unlikely that they manually post their rubbish.

To true - 99.8% of forum spam is posted by bots.

I know this because I have finally managed to find a working anti-spambot solution and implemented it on four forums I run. Since settting it up three weeks ago there have been three spam posts between the four forums and over 100 failed spam signups per day.

I would imagine that IPC have some pretty rigourous anti-bot routines in place. I suspect that the odd post -such as those by Mr. Nike Trainer Salesman - that DO make it on here are actually manual signups.

That's what I was saying Brendan . . . these fora have remarkably little spam, so obviously YBW has an effective way of dealing with attempted bot registrations and posting.

There is no way to stop the dedicated manual spammer really . . . but these are few and far between.

More moderators with net useage habits that span the clock, it is not like the ybw.com is short of volunteers.

Unit is usually on early am, various bods are regular during the day and Lakey in always on late at night; add to that some of them foreign types and hey-presto 24 hour coverage.

On This forum , if you include any links in your first posts some software cuts in that automatically notifies the moderators and blocks the link

Getting more common - 2 posts that definitely look like spam in the Restaurants section this morning, and our Indian friend hit every section too...
