We need a message board where we can advertise our unwanted boating bits and bobs. You know the stuff, items too cheap to buy an advert for, odds and ends for sale or swap. I do know of a site but I am not sure of the posting rules here so I daren't tell you that it is at: http://www.boatsandoutboards.com OOPS! ;)

At risk of lighting the blue touch paper, would users pay for such a service or should it be zero cost to post items for sale? Now I know there are free services out there (thanks for resisting the temptation to name any Byron :-) ) but you won't be surprised to learn that money does help us to put food on the table (and pay hungry developers) in order to maintain and develop the ybw sites.
Before I get drummed off of our own forums, let me stress I am just looking for views, either here or on kim_hollamby@ipcmedia.com (for the record Byron, HTML doesn't work here, hence reason e-mail addresses not hyperlinked).

Working weekends too now Kim ? I am very concious of the fact that money makes the world go around. However! I would suggest to you that the banners more than pay for this section of the site. If you need a few more bob add an ASK JEEVES search option too (mine earns me over a tenner a day) Re-reading the above it sounds brusque, it isn't meant that way :) As you know local newspapers often have a section where you can advertise stuff for less than say £50. I mean if I have half a dozen fenders at £1 each I don't want to pay £10 to advertise them. A perfect example is two seats I have for sale at a few quid each. It just isn't worth my while advertising them, but I bet someone out there would kill for them as they are Broom ones that look good in any boat's saloon.

I think that by offering a members for sale option on a freebie basis would provide for increased site traffic generation. Advertsing is as much a part of the site as is the editorial and a good "classified" section will bring people back to the site thus creating a regular viewership which in turn will impact on upon "dispaly" ad. sales - banners, pop ups and additional promotions. I don't know how you are measuring your site traffic - web trends? Red Sherrif? I am involved in new media but use this site out of personal interest and see an advantage in having a "members only" ad. forum which generates regualr traffic to attract the brand advertisers at a premium rate. Punters are not yet ready to pay for content in any great numbers, therefore you need to not only generate site traffic, but also keep up and build on regular readers - oddly enough not dissimilar to what you had to achieve in print! Some may say that this is heresy but its a fact of life, advertsing, sponsorship etc does make the world go round!

Now you know why I want to charge! Just joking. After 14 years on MBM weekends are second nature; joined the web team because they told me it was 0930-1730 Mon-Fri and I needed a break :-)
