Why pick Web BBS?
      #16211 - 15/05/2001 15:55

In a post below you said the software was crummy Web BBS written in 96. That clears something up. I and others thought you we're forced by ipc or whoever to write something from scratch, but now you're telling us you are using an off the shelf product. In which case why the hell pick one that even you say is crummy? Why not use Ultimate BB or any of the other sooper dooper ones that I and others here have suggested since a long time ago?

If you don't believe me and would like to see an Ultimate BB in action please let me know and I'll give you a url.

Separate point, this ybw BB is now getting really slow. When you click on a message it takes ages to get the message, and the delay is not at my end. Can this be fixed?

Sorry to sound as though winghing but really, 4 days into this, it's feeling pretty frustrating to operate. Hope it can be fixed.

Web BBS is not being used here in exactly off-the-shelf format; to get the quickest fix we stuck with this platform as many users wanted us to go live again with minimal delay (in fact we would have been off for only a few hours had a concurrent server migration not complicated things).

There's a shed load of work going on here regarding better solutions and registered users will be hearing from us later this week regarding next steps that should satisfy most, if not all, of the feedback received.

I'm not being forced to do anything :)

I didnt choose WebBBS. The forum has always used WebBBS. I was just asked to take a look at the code and add the login system.

We didnt want to have the forums down for longer than necessary, so we didnt have time to investigate the possibility of using other software. This is something for the longer term.

OK, will watch for refinements and tweaks over the next few weeks! Just one thought though, you said it would be hard to migrate to new BB software; if it made it easier you might consider losing all the messages that have already been posted, so starting with a clean sheet and avoiding the need to migrate the old stuff. That's just my vote, others might disagree, I just think it would be worth it to get something as slick as the other BBs that are around. Best wishes.
