Is there any way of sorting the index of a forum by the date/time of the last post, rather than the date/time the last new thread was posted?

Yes, it's an option in user options which is top left of screen

It's in display preference (edit) and sort threads by , select last post date

But a word of warning. If you ever alter anything else in "dispaly preferences" section the date sorting always defaults back to "by creation date" unless you reselect "by last post date" before you submit your changes. ..
