Fresh herbs
      #1831206 - 20/04/2008 22:15

Hi all,
Is there anybody out there that can give us an idea of growing fresh herbs onboard, while cruising and which ones are the hardiest to last??

Have a look at this thread. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php?C...rue#Post1735055
I've got some basil on the go at the moment grown from seed but it's looking a bit sad though I think i had a salt water drip for a day on passage which prob didn't help. Others have had more success.

Hi Paddy
Thanx for the reply and the post to check out, very helpful and interesting. It will help us quite a lot and it's nice to know that there are others out there with the same problems that we encounter or will encounter.
Thanx again
Brendan & Maryann

On any boat basilic & parsley grow well. The cockpits ideal lots of sun heat and some shade.I also keep chives which are very hardy!

With the basilic&parsley they both dislike to much (fresh)water try never to water their leaves just their feet.

To help prevent "foot rot" you should add about a centimeter of sand to the to of the earth that way the water dosent cause rot at the bottom stem, always cut from the top and they will grow again and last forever.

On passage put safely below away from salt spray,if not to big? They can live under the spray hood, best to buy about 8 plants that way as you use them they dont get to high!

The parsley has to have its earth and pot changed every year as they hate the "things" their roots produces and will die if not moved.

As your equiped with an XYL(swmbo) you can try planting cherry tommatoes, its said that tomatoes put "things" into the earth flowers love and thrive on?And swmbo love flowers. My tomatoe (without flowers) have never been a succsses when ive tried

Lots of basilic and a bit less parsley then it wont get in the way.Good planting! And good eating latter
