We went for a 12v system (Village Marine lw200), not fitted it yet though so can't comment on how well it works, however I thought I'd pass on my reasons for going 12v. Basically your engine, solar panels, wind genny and generator can all provide 12v, if you go 240v only the genny will do that unless you use an inverter but you'd need a pretty hefty one and that's more cost etc.

Ours is supposed to run at 17 amps and produce around 36 litres per hour. Incidentally, Village marine told me that you don't have to run them every day, once or twice a week would be fine (depends where in the world you are though), although I reckon an hour a day would probably provide us with ample water.
