Spraying varnish?
      #1839584 - 28/04/2008 10:01

I am very short of time to get some layers of varnish on my boat in time for racing at the weekend. I have all the necessary spray equipment and a tin of Epifanes, so am wondering if I should try this "5 coats in a day" concept. I knew a boatbuilder years ago that swore by brushing three coats on straight after each other (as soon as the previous coat had gone-off enough to hold a finger print), so I can belive it works, but am not sure about the addition of "Japan Drier" which I have also read should not be added in large quantities (the 5 coat concept talks about 30%). I could really do with getting this turned around in a day, so any thoughts would be appreciated. By the way, I already have 2 coats of Eposeal epoxy primer on, so just need to build up the finish.

I can't give you any real advice on the above method and it's merits.
I can only assume if the day you chose is good, not too windy, and dry with not to much humidity.
I see no reason why it should not work.
Good luck.
Please post a picy when you have done the Job.

I think you might struggle to have it tough enough to use the boat in that time, given what you want to acheive I'd look at two paclk poluurethane varnish.

Well, if you have got the sealer on, why not just leave it at that and go racing, then deal with the varnish at a more leisurely pace afterwards?

I have tried spraying varnish, and its not easy. Roll and tip for a quicker finish and deeper shine. With three coats a day and using Epi you will have REAL problems with solvent entrapment. Epi is a pain in the arse at the best of times being really slow drying, and to be honest, far to expensive to be loseing some of it to the atmosphere! One coat a day is a realistic target, and rolling/tipping will give you an equal build-up.

I have tried accelerating Epi with driers but it just won't play ball. In fact I only use it if the customer has insisted!

Crusty-Eposeal, like most epoxies is not UV stable, and needs covering with further coats of somthing. Its a good foundation, IF you can get the following coats to stick to it.

Sorry I've had to remove the picture because it's too big and breaking the forum template. Please use images no wider than 300 pixels, www.resizr.com is a very easy, free tool if you need it.
