Just found this on U Tube... Have even more explicit footage! We were one of 5 liveaboards there at the time. On the wall where the first shots are taken. Believe me this footage was taken AFTER the main storm passed through!! Scary, the worst we've ever experienced. 36 hours of over 100knts. Try it sometime! We had people commenting about 'putting out to sea' etc. & 'we heard it was rough & water was coming over the sea wall'! We pointed out that coming over the sea wall was from the Inside!!! If anyone is interested I'll try to get the shots together to post but I'm not very technologically gifted!

Geez, glad I wasn't there! When did that happen? Oh, and since I know that marina: those sailing boats seem moored on the outer wall. If so, isn't the wind actually blowing from SE rather than NE?

Hi, You may want to think about that!
The wind is blowing from the NE the main harbour wall is to the south. When were you there? The Perfect Storm was 13th - 15th November 2004.

Welcome to the Adriatic! It's odd the boats were blown over; that smacks a little of incompetence. We always have the bows pointing NE, anchor and chain on the ground and sometimes extra reinforcement to hold the boat still. After all, these winds will blow through at least two or three times each winter for two or more days (although not usually exceeding 80 knots or so). In the Velebit channel, the fishermen apparently have their own special mask: a bucket with two eyeholes to enable them to breathe when the wind whips up the surface of the sea. I have my own boat moored upwind of a concrete jetty; there are three very robust warps linked to chain on the seabed to stop me being blown back against it, but even so, anything that creates windage comes off for the winter! In this bora of November 2004, we clocked 101 knots here in town. All mopeds were grounded and I was in my car (a heavy Subaru at the time) wandering who was shaking it. All the road signs were jiving too! But it only made a short mention on the local news.

This Bora nicknamed 'The Perfect Storm' was indeed unusual. The boat by the travel lift was literally lifted out of her cradle. A domino effect happened when the big aluminium boat tried to 'take off' and the cradle broke. At Split Airport they were tying the planes down. Wind speed recorded on the island of Pag was 245 Kms (not sure of the conversion but around 130knots). We still think Croatia is brillient!

Ok, I understood from your post that this happened recently. In 2004 I was still cruising the Adriatic, and yes, I heard about that unbelievable wind speed in Pag. Luckily my boat was far from there...

Perfect clip to understand - what is Bora. 2 or 3 times yearly, during winter, it blows with a force of hurricane 3 to 4. During March it blows at 7. , 17. and 27. ( as old people says) very strongly. During summer sometimes it blows with force 9 (40 to 50 kts). BUT MORE DANGER WIND DURING WINTER IS "JUGO" - SOUTH WEST WIND AS IT MAKE BIG WAVES ( max. wave measured on the oil platform in North Adriatic was 11 m as Pilot says!) Off course , if you respect sea and forecast, such strong wind is predictable and it is not difficult to avoid danger situation. By the way, Marina Kastela is situated on the direct force of Bora from Klis region and I should not leave my boat there during winter months. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=q-WhHtQ3k30&feature=related

Thanks for that branko. This storm was forecast as a strong Bura it was, in fact, much worse than anticipated. Yes the Bura funnels through the Kliss valley. In 2004 Marina Kastella was still under construction and as you know finding places for the winter in Croatia, even then, was not easy. I agree, the Jugo is fearsome but M.Kastella is protected from that direction!
Respecting the sea and forecast is indeed a sailors number one priority, but in the situation of 13-15th Nov 2004 there was no way out!

My boat is there, and I've been on her several times during a Bura, but not as strong as the 2004 one. Although the Buru is known for blowing downwards, the marina is in the lee of a mountain range which offers a lot of protection. They now have 3 forward mooring lines in each berth, one coming directly from the NE. Of all the places to be in Croatia during a Bura, I'm most at ease when I'm there.
EDIT: and no, my Pack-A-Main and Bimini on eBay were not rigged during the Bura!

Looks like about 35 to 40 knots, no more.. a lot of crappily built cradles and poor shoreing.. the guys walking on the pntoons wouldnt be able to stand in much more..
maybe odd gust to more.. we have had similar condition here in Coruna.. at least what were shown on the film..
I simply cant believe that that 100 knots was there, no way.. but, only on the evidence of the film..

well I don't know about the film, but I do not know what was officially registered that day in Trieste by the weather bods (188 kph gust), and a bora almost as strong is a regular occurence during the winter.

Our intention is not to prove that in 2004. Bura was over 100 kts in Kastela and over 120 kts in the North. My boat still have scratches on the bow from that November. You can believe or not but that evening national television in central News said that in Velebit chanel was measured short strong wind gust ( we call it Reful ) of 203 km/h. Was it true or not -I don't know but this value meteorologists release in central News. Looks unbelievable but that afternoon I came in my Marina and was not able to get out of my car. It was terrible!

"Believe me this footage was taken AFTER the main storm passed through!!"
It's amazing how difficult it is to explain what the conditions were like. There was only one person 'crawling' around during this. It took forever to get to the office to find no-one there. Eventually the 'sailors' were found in the restaurant. If any of them are still working there they will remember that moment!!! Capt. Birkett had ordered that it was too dangerous for any of them to be on the pontoons or sea wall. Surfice it to say that after a heated discussion they did arrive and assist.
Big_Nige am glad you are happy in Kastella and it's gratifying that they presumably have beefed up the mooring lines. The mountains actually are'nt a proctection as they cause the increase effect of the Bura through katabatic wind added to that the Bura funnels through the Kliss valley. The surveyors, after the storm commented that this was a dangerous place to build a marina. Of 50 boats on the outer wall 38 were damaged.
Some of the damage went over a metre under water!!! not from 30-40 knot gusts.
If Dennis is still working there just mention Ziggy & the tall bearded angry man!!!

Absolutely correct. Why it is not so good place for Bura? Answer is in geography of around mountains Kozjak and Mosor with funnel Klis in between. Even it blows from NE direction Bura is not blowing with full force in direction Split .It turns in direction Trogir because of Kastela bay and hit directly to Marina Kastela with full force. Very similar situation is in Trogir. Marinas on opposite side of the bay in Split are protected!

I'll scrap my plan to moor on the east side of Trogir then!! Just arrived in Monfalcone, "only" 18hrs driving from Brighton. I don't remember the night in Baden Baden.
