I'm back
      #1845017 - 02/05/2008 11:22

Sorry I disappeared so abruptly but I felt I was being intimidated and I was being accused of taking 'cheap shots' at the EA. I have received feedback from a River User Group giving their unanimous support for the Lock Keepers, so much so they intend to form an action group. If you are involved in your local RUG, please make your feelings known.
Once again thanks for all your messages of support, to the poet laureates for their poems (you may well find these pinned up in lock offices). I feel this is becoming a political issue and would urge you to contact your MP to stop the cutbacks in funding. There is a very real risk that understaffing will increase flood risk.

Freedom of speech lives on
No one, least of all the EA can bully you, you have your say mate.

I think there's a distinct possibility that we are being encouraged to take sides here without being in posession of all the facts.

Would be interested to know why hpr thinks there is an increased risk of flooding associated with the EA's proposals re lock cottages.

As a licence holder (over £500 this year) and a tax payer my primary interest is in the best possible management of the Thames, and particularly how it impacts on value for money re my licence fee.

I see that as very simple....

If you take a lockies house away, as they are paid crap money, they will have to move miles away, somewhere like Wycombe or Aylesbury.

When a flood occurs, could be an hour before anyone turns up maybe longer.

Also once they have gone home, and lets face it, I think they wont in be in any frame of mind to do any overtime, there wont be anyone monitoring the situation thru the night.

Based on the flood last July going from downpour to flood in 5 hours, an hour is important?

I expect my £600 a year to go towards IMPROVING the situation not worsening it.

Also heard thru the grapevine on weekend, that a lockie has talked to Oxford Radio and now on serious disciplinary and risk of downing his pension....Nice People to do business with.
