Best Navtex ?
      #1847299 - 05/05/2008 08:24

I'm planning to by a Navtex and asking advice for the best model ? Some arguments would be welcome as well.
And where is the best price available through internet ?

Bought mine off E Bay - check out E bay shop 'online marine mart'
New kit, my best offer price was considerably lower than the 'ask' price. Arrived a couple of days later etc

We have an old ICS printing till roll one. If it failed I would get one again, although I guess it would have to be S/H

I really like the printed output. Can feed GPS into it an get printed position every 30min or hour whatever you set up. So if everything fails you have printed position an hour ago.

Perhaps there is a picture of your boat there already.

I think that I'd always run out of paper so guess had better get one with LCD display.

I have the Furuno NX300D (518 & 490khz), GPS linked so automatically downloads messages for the area that you're in. Nice clear display with large characters. Also acts as a GPS repeater. Very pleased with it so far.
Nice piece of kit. Not the cheapest though.

NASA is fine, value for money. Does what it says on the box. They are so tight, they don't spend too much on the instructions either, but the product is better than adequate.
Make sure you have both frequencies anyway- in UK you benefit from in shore forecasts that way

PBO did a review a year or so ago. They recommended Furuno mainly because it received far more staions - it just had by far the best range.

My Nasa has not picked up a message for the last fortnight.

Not saying its the machies fault, but I am begining to think I ought to invest in a better machine.

I guess in the end you get what you pay for!

Bought the Furuno set two years ago and it's never failed to pick up a signal.

Having had a Nasa clipper, then an ICS nav 6 and now a Furuno NX300D. There is no question in my mind that the Furuno is streets ahead. Nasa is a good budget machine, I found the ICS very poor and difficult to operate, but the Furuno is brilliant. I'm on the same berth as when I had the ICS and it is pulling in tons more. Top kit.

Another happy Furuno user. Terrific range. Always picks up a forecast.

Had a NASA Clipper on my last boat. Great bit of kit. Left on 24/7. Always got the forecasts etc... and saved me from worrying about tuning in to the inshore forecast as I usually forgot. Bought another NASA for new boat. Can't comment on other products, but no complaints about NASA.
