Painting wood
      #184836 - 12/01/2002 12:53

I am about to re-paint the coach house and wheel house sides on my Rampart. They are made of marine ply. I have received advice from a boat builder that a good external house paint such as Dulux would be OK. Has anybody got experience/views on this? I have removed all the old paint and varnish and am now back to bare wood. Is it worth spending extra and using one of the proprietary yacht paints. Mon or poly urethane?

The Rampart will be used mainly on the inland waters of Ireland so I'll really just need protection from rain and fresh water.

Thanks

If it's really down to wood (with maybe a smear of old paint/primer) you'd do worse than prime with Universal Clear Primer from International (UCP). It's clear, universal and primes. I've not found anything to match it. It's the very devil to scrape off if ever you need to but a rock solid basis for a new paint job. Perhaps thinned, second coat neat. Moisture helps it cure, but the surface must be dry, preferably very dry. The you can slap on Dulux to your heart's content.

Have sucessfully used Dulux weathershield over marine undercoats as a hull paint but this was because of a better colour range rather than cost, it was dearer than equivelant yacht paint! reckon its the undercoat/preperation that counts more than paint type.

Is weathershield an acrylic or enamel?

I can certainly recommend Dulux weathershield textured masonary paint as a non-slip coating on the horizontal surfaces.

If you have been able to achieve a perfect "bare wood" finish, the Ramparts look superb varnished (superstructure).

Have seen "Deks ole" ('iffy spelling) used as a base for varnishing very successfully. Easy to use, seals the bare timber and helps to preserve the colour after the varnish has been applied.

Saw one boat where Dulux had been used, and it looked awful. Mind, that may have been the way it was applied.

Use a good primer/sealer, internationals is excellent, then yacht enemel, it's designed for the job! I know dulux is designred for exterior work, but not the hammer it gets on a boat, even in fresh water, it's a lot easier to paint a house! Varnish looks fabulous, but I would be very careful in my choices of varnish! Coelans is a superior product, available through some chandlers.
