There are boatyards at the following: Sotogrande, La Duquesa and Estepona. The Estepona one used to be run by a chap called Colin, English. I had paintwork done there. Also Marina Smir across the Staits, 20 odd miles from Gib. Boatyard ron by Marina Marbella. Had excellent paintwork done there too. If you do that option, get the paint in Gib, much cheaper.

Sheppards' electronics bloke is good, the chandlery is still going, but everything else is pretty well dead or difficult and expensive. If you're set on Gibraltar you might get some suggestions from the Marina Bay port office (Karl, Brian or Johnny). Marina Smir's yard is good, very professionally run and not expensive. Not sure about what services are available, but no parts or materials chandlery - bring (everything) from Gib or La Linea. I have heard that Ceuta is good, but no personal experience. Sotogrande or Duquesa will probably sort you out, although at a price. I think Estepona's yard has closed . . . ??? although I don't know why. Cheaper and a bit tattier, Fuengirola has a busy yard and 2 or 3 chandleries (one English) neighbouring. They do paintwork - I've seen 'em at it. Make sure you get a firm quote before they start!

Gibraltar.......yacht repairs??????
Jim is right, we were both there over 2006 Christmas. Forget Gib., you are more likely to sustain damage rather than get repairs.

Sorry, but that is wrong. I spent over 4 years there working for a sailing school. Got just about every repair possible done over that time to a small fleet of yachts. You just have to ask in the right place!!

ok, always willing to be corrected, but I was there full-time for 18 months (and working) until Sept 2007 . . fitting electronics, yes . . . spraying topsides? I do wonder where would that be done . . Plenty of boats in Gib and quite a few 'services' available like mechanics, stainless steel - but nothing really 'out of the water' surely (for yachts)(unless you count paying Sheppards loadsamoney to hire in a crane at their Coaling Island place). I thought the sailing school boats went across the bay to Algeciras or across to Morocco to get lifted out. ?? IMVHO - so please correct any misapprehensions on my part.

But when was that?
Gibraltar was OK in the sixties when I first started going there but that is certainly not the case now. No lift out facilities, no sailmaker, only one stainless steel place to speak of (and that's going soon)....some work can be done by Sheppards but at a (high) price, cooking gas difficult to come by.....not really much to reccommend it as a repair port.
Others may think differently but I certainly would not go there again when there are far more suitable places close by.
