I had a close look at her on Thursday evening when she was moored at Teddington. We were allowed to moor alongside and then given a guided tour.

Considering that she was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation she is in amazingly good condition.

In 1939 was the fastest ship in the RN - and we had a massive navy then, saw her last year at Sandwich altho' flying the Red Duster now. When I was on Defiance in '52 we had 3 MTBs as tenders (not 102) and also 2 midget submarines - went aboard one of the MTBs but didn't get a trip. Got a feeling she has not the original engines - can you imagine the petrol bill?

Wow.

Missed her, more's the pity. SWMBO is expecting queries from journos this week when local papers publish atricles on her.

Pity they couln't fit some dummy torps, that _would_ scare the robos:-)

originally 3 x 1100 HP petrols
Now 2 x600 HP Cummins Diesels
Long bulge on the foredeck shows that torpedo designed to be fired from the stem through a hatch in the bow, although trials showed that the twin tube technique was bettter and she was converted to that format with 2 x 21inch tubes.
Departed Teddington about 0845 08MAy and passed through the lock and pulled up (for breakfast according to the lockie) on the lock layby. Greeted at Shepperton Lock by Walton Bridge Cruiser Club Members 'Jeverek' and 'Lady Greybrooke'. Passed through Shepperton Lock (alone in the lock) around 1130. Narrowboat owner coming out of Shepperton Lock and faced with an MTB got a bit of a shock

Saw her again this evening moored by Hammertons ferry in Twickenham.

I sailed past her several times but did not see much
sign of life on board. I think they must have gone ashore for a curry.

She will presumably be heading downstream through London tomorrow morning.

Don't need one as a visitor, you just have to swear that the vessel complies with regulations; not sure if you have to show third party insurance either.

'Excuse me, but do you have a BSS for 'dat vessel?'

'Load tube one...... '

'Err, forget it...lovely looking boat...Here! Have a free visitor pass and a Gold lock pass which enables you to jump the queue at locks and......'

The Gold Lock pass .... now that's a good idea !!

Don't the passenger steamers already have one of these ?

Yeah, I had a look at the 'out of hours' power key, which in some cases is just a chunk of steel tube...

Reckon I could make me one of those

When I was on board on Thursday evening I noticed that they had a very impressive selection of booze tucked away.

I expect that their stocks will be a lot lower now.
