Just getting to write my first cheque to the EA - now getting to understand some of the emotion surrounding river usage costs - wow, not cheap is it?
Anyway, on my BSS, the length of my boat is recorded as 40'. Now it is fairly clear that she is 36' 2" LOA but I can only assume the inspector measured davits to pulpit length. I would clearly prefer to use the shorter obviously. Does the EA charge registration fees on davits (as well as the tender attached to them!)?

Hull length and Beam, not Davits and extras.
The Marina will charge you for anything though, including overhanging Aerials, bits of Rope and Bird poo. I find the best policy for me is to just quote the manufacturers hull length...

No_Regrets, you just saved me about £85. Thanks. As far as a I know the length of my boat has not changed much since 1934 - and certainly not by 4 feet!

I had problem with the ea when they tried to charge me on LOA, I proved them wrong!
If you have any problem please contact me as I still have the letters from the EA chief exectutive accepting hull length.
Although i never recieved an appoligy for there incompotence!

Given the discrepancy between what I am declaring and the BSS Certificate, I can see I might need to use these. Any chance you can PM me the rationale in advance?

The license application form seems relatively clear:-
Quote:
Please enter length and beam measurements in metres and tenths. ‘Length’ is overall hull length excluding movable items such as rudder or outboard engine. ‘Beam’ is measured at the widest part of the hull. (Use tables on pages 4 and 5 to help calculate the chargeable area.)
you can download the form from this clicky

I agree it seems clear, but it is clear on the BSS form as well. Not sure why you would use different measures on that. Presumably that is there as a check on the licence fee.

I don't think the BSS measurement is at all accurate and used in anyway by the EA. It will probably be a best guess by the surveyor and will just allow him to classify the boat length band for the correct number of Fire extinguishers etc...

OK thanks guys. Sent off - last step before actually enjoying the boat.
Will be nice to feel that the cheques are going towards a boat rather than a glorified wooden pontoon.
