Cardiff Etiquette
      #1856236 - 12/05/2008 21:03

We recently visited Cardiff for the first time last weekend.

Had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fantastic bay and great restaurants with everyone extremely friendly. I though it was great

However, I was absolutely amazed when locking in and out.

Everyone simply barges past each other trying to get into a lock. Never mind boats in an orderly queue waiting for the boat in front to enter the lock.

They just go straight round you, sailing mobo's makes no difference.

It this what happens all the time?

This does not happen in Portishead or Bristol. No one would dream of pushing in, what's the point.

It did make me laugh though. One saily boat pushed past the lot and there was no enough room. So he had to push back and try and get in the next one. Serves him right.

In a funny sort of way queues, even though I am English, suck so I'd be inclined to applaud non-queueing. 'Orderly queuing', as a concept, actually hurts.

Have to agree with you "Who" distinct lack of manners and courtesy.
Being Welsh, it shames me to say, it doesn't happen like that in Portishead or Bristol.

Was it Sunday? All the race yachts try to get back in as quickly as possible.

It was 9am on Sunday locking out.

And to some degree about 1.30pm Saturday locking in.

I’ve used the locks a few times over the past year and generally people are courteous and enter the locks in an orderly fashion. There will of course always be exceptions. Sounds like you experienced those exceptions in and out.

I was out Sunday and didn’t have a problem, maybe down to luck of the timing though I haven't had a major problem all year.

There are still courteous types in existence down here, hopefully you’ll have a better experience on your next visit.

Hi glad you enjoyed Cardiff Bay,there used to be a booking procedure in the early days if i remember but that seems to have gone by the wayside,i know how frustrating it can be especialy in a small slow sail boat to book a lock and on the way to be overtaken by faster boats to fill the lock and then be forced to wait for the next one, also comercial operations seem to have priority i dont know how true this is though.but on the whole people still seem to be good mannered.

At Swansea, entry order is down to the the lockmaster and woe betide any queue jumpers!

They used to call you in by boat name 5 years or so ago, but now it is a free for all. Someone will have an accident one of these days.
