AQ120 volvo petrol cylinder heads - automotive equivalent?
      #1856532 - 13/05/2008 01:14

Hi folks,
A friend has 2 of these fitted but had his boat on a swinging mooring for a couple of years without the rubber flaps on the out-drive leg (old 270's I think). Anyway, his exhaust manifolds were corroding to the point of no return, so he sourced a replacement pair from somewhere. Now it turns out, his cylinder heads have dissolved around the exhaust gasket joint and won't seal even with a new gasket. He's strapped for cash and was hoping for some ideas on the car these were once fitted to, whence he could get a pair perhaps from a scrappy. I did advise him to go to a decent welders and have the material built up and machined to suit. Any ideas on what else he could do?
Cheers in advance.

No chance of taking them to a engine reconditioners and getting a few mm skimmed off the face like you would with a head.

I think these engines are the Volvo B20A type, fitted to the Volvo 142 coupe, 144 saloon and 145 Estate from 1968 to 1975, Hope this helps.

I don't think so It does rather depend on whether it is an AQ120A or an AQ120B.

The AQ120B is a 2.13 litre OHC B21 engine as fitted in the 200 series cars but the AQ120A is a 1.78 litre OHV engine.
That means it is either a B17 or a B18. See this list The B18 1778cc engine was fitted to the early 140 series cars until1968 when it was superseded by the 1986cc B20 engine.

If its an AQ120B then its an OHC B21 engine from the 200 series
If its an AQ120A then probably its a B18 OHV engine from the early 140 series

Edit:

Just re read the original post. I think the reference to 270 makes it an AQ 120B and therefore a B21 2.13litre OHC engine from the 200 series cars.
