US$ vs £ buying power
      #1856910 - 13/05/2008 11:28

Hi,

Would it be fair to say, that when it comes to boats, what you can buy in US for a dollar you can buy in UK/EU for a pound.

So theoretically a boat bought in US for $100k would be put on sale in UK/EU for £100k

Or is it generally accepted to be a bit lower - say $100k there = £80k here?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi,

The 1 - 1 rate is not far off when comparing UK price with the USA price.

However when you take into consideration the costs involved (Shipping, VAT, Duty, CE Complaince etc) the figure 1 - 1 is not a very accurate way of working out what a USA boat would cost to get into the UK.

Are you talking new or used?

Assuming you are talking about new US built boats, you are about right - a $100k boat in the states will probably be £90k-£100k over here.

Dont forget, boats in the states are advertised ex-TAX as each state has different sales and luxury taxes. Also, US manufacturers have added cost of transatlantic shipping and import tax over here.

If you look at the EU net cost compared to your US net cost you are looking at $100k being sold here for £69k plus tax and shipping

I'm talking about used boats so does the following still apply?

"Dont forget, boats in the states are advertised ex-TAX as each state has different sales and luxury taxes. "

Would I have to pay sales and luxury taxes if I bought a used boat in US for importing over here? How much for Florida?

Jeff

I have imported a couple of used boats from Florida.

The boat price in $ is has advertised and NOT subject to any USA tax.

You pay the VAT @ 17.5% on the total cost (boat + shipping) and you also pay import duty @ 1.7% on the cost of the boat. This is payable to UK customs.

If you are bringing it over here you do not pay the sales tax. My point was, a US buyer cannot by the boat for $100k.

It will be $100k plus whatever the state taxes are.

If you bring a boat over here, you have to pay 17.5% VAT and 1.7% import tax, regardless of whehter new or used
