Does this proposal break any international rules?
      #1857156 - 13/05/2008 14:40

"The use of water skis on any part of Lough Corrib in the administrative area of Galway County Council shall be restricted to the main navigational channel"

This is one rule my local council are trying to enforce. They are trying to have it that you can ONLY water-ski in the main navigational channel

Is it just me or is this totally bonkers? I plan on writing a submission to the council, but would like to have some sort alternative/backup rather than just saying "you're a fuppin idiot"

Not necessarily. I don't know the area at all, but could it be that there are kids in sailing dinghy's elesewhere and they don't want speed boats running them over, or maybe they don't want erosion of the banks from wash of boats running close too the shore, or even are there dangerous shallows and they're trying to protect the skiers?

I'm not saying they would be good reasons, only that there may be reasons

It's is mainly an angling lake. There are no official activities on the lake ie. people sailing

The navigational channels are shallow and narrow (As narrow as 30ft in some places)

It is a 64sq mile lake with lots of open areas... but these open area's are not in the navigational channel. When I go skiing I try to get away from other boats (ie. get away from teh channel) rather than putting every single fast boat in the same narrow channel

Be wary.
They could ban water skiing altogether or introduce a speed limit.

Ireland have the Maritime Safety Act 2005 I believe which governs the inland waterways - check this out first. I think you will also find it helpful to check the official bye-laws for the waterway , there must be some somewhere . Also you could ask to see a copy of the navigation risk assessment and evidence that they have consulted with other users who have interests in the waterway.
Good Luck
