Iam currently rewiring my yacht the existing arrangement has two side lights red and green and an all round white masthead light for motoring and a tricolour masthead light for sailing. Is this still correct. My copy of "learning the rules of the road "states that a motor driven boat or yacht if under 12mtrs, only requires an all round white light and sidelights and no white stern light.

This diagram illustrates all the legal combinations but yes for motoring sidelights (or bicolour) and an all-round white are permissible

However remember that lights at the mast head are often lost among the shore light when view from the bridge of a large vessel.
I like to be able to include a stern light (and a steaming light) so that side and stern, together with steaming light if under power can be used when they are more appropriate
