I have invited my non-sailing boss for a weekend's sailing in June - but one seeing photos of Roach's accommodation has refused to stay onboard the night and would like to stay in a nice hotel (he is used to very nice, so we are looking top end) - he would also like to take me out for a top end meal too (He is used to Michelan stars - you get the picture).
Was wondering where I could combine the two within an easy sail from the Walton Backwaters. Was thinking Crown and Castle in Orford, but the tides that weekend make it impossible to get up from London, kit the yacht and make the bar without some stress.
Are there any options on the Essex Rivers, as I dont know them at all?

The hotel in the Ipswich Wet Dock (it's name escapes me for the moment) is reputed to be nice.

Did that for lunch last year with my parents - not impressed to be frank. Unromantic sailing approach, stuffy (without the quality of food or service to match) and stop serving at 2pm - and as we were running a bit late on the tide they rushed us so they could clear the room.

The Pier at Harwich is owned by the same people that own Milsoms, Maison Talbooth and Le Talbooth in Dedham. These are top notch and expensive (but hey your not paying). I believe that they will run a Taxi/car service between The Pier and the other places. It might be worth a phone call.

Salthouse Harbour Hotel. SWMBO and I stayed there about a month ago, excellent staff, accommodation was also good, 4*, didn't try the restaurant as we where not hungry due to late lunch round the corner in Loch Fyne but menu looked good and it was busy (booking necessary). Would recommend it to anyone.

Salthouse Harbour Hotel. I think this is the way to go. No waves, no seasickness, all tidal, can abort in Ipswich if he does like boats, no mud and no dingies.

The hotel in Ipswich wet do ck is called the Salt House Hotel,
Not posh but te Butt and Oyster in Pin Mill is always good value with a muddy trip onto the hard from a mooring or a nice walk through the wood on the shoreline from Woolverstone

Yes that’s the one, converted Malthouse and now Salthouse Harbour Hotel.
The rooms overlooking the marina are good to very good and the staff are good as well, sadly food not impressive.
The better option is to book him in there and eat on the floating French restaurant just outside the hotel, Il Punto, food excellent, all be it not cheap.
Bear in mind it’s a long haul up river at 6 kts.

Have you considered Woodbridge or do the tidal constraints that day rule it out ?
A much nicer location all round than Ipswich wet dock, a couple of reasonable restuarants - The Captain's Table is one of them. We ate there last week-end and try and do so a couple of times a year or so. Not actually michelin starred but it is in the michelin red book. I don't know about hotels there, but there must be some good ones within taxi range. The "facilities" at Woodbridge tide mill are now excellent whereas prior to last year were dire and Woodbridge is a nice small town to wonder round and the tide mill itself is quite interesting.
