Fuel Filter Petrol - Engine Bay
      #1858586 - 14/05/2008 15:18

Does somebody know the low down concerning having a fuel filter (on a petrol engine) housed within the engine bay.
Now having a glass bowled filter to me wouldn't be ideal but what about an all metal filter?

Interested to hear any views, especially concerning insurance.

Many Thanks,

Most outboards have a plastic filter.
I can't see anything wrong with a metal filter as per a fuel injection car.
Obviously keep it away from heat such as exhaust etc. How hot does your engine box get? Will there be a problem with the fuel vapourising? This might make re-starting difficult?
Perhaps low down in the engine bay would be cooler?
I would check the boat safety scheme. I assume the filter has to go after the pump, or there would be a good case for mounting it nearer the tank. What kind of engine/fuel system?
So all I really know is that I think you're right to want a filter!

Personally I'd be happy to install a regular plastic inline filter from a motor factors in a safe place, bearing in mind the fuel pipes should be routed away from heat sources such as manifolds etc...

This is just my view, and obviously depends on specific situation etc...

Section 2.12 of the Boat safety scheme deals with filters. If you follow that you cannot go far wrong.

I have a metel bowl filter in the engine compartment for my petrol engine. Can't see a problem with that.
