Well I had to attend the ISA's consultation meeting in Dromineer this evening but decided it was much too nice to come by car so I left the office at 1430, collected OF and cruised to Dromineer for the meeting. Spending the night on board and then early start for meeting back in Dublin tomorrow morning.

Great pics, OF, especially the last one. 22.15 and the sun has just set! I've noticed myself how much later the sun sets in W Ireland compared to London. Where's Dromineer btw? Looks like a v pleasant cruising area

Thanks for comments mikef and Al, it's a privilage and blessing to escape to such a magical cruising area only 2hrs drive from home on the east coast. I left a client at 1400, looked at the sky and said, heck I know where I'm going for one night, back in the office this later morning.
Dromineer is home to one of Ireland most successful Yacht Clubs - LDYC founded in 1835.

Thanks, OF. I often see signs to Lough Derg when I drive from Dublin to Limerick but I did'nt realise it was comnnected to the Shannon. How far can you get upstream from the Shannon estuary? Is air draft a limiting factor?

See here

Hi Mike,
Yep you can go from the sea through Limerick, through Ardnacrusha Dam up into the lake system which will take you all the way up to Northern Ireland.
The limiting factor is airdraft through Ardnacrusha which is 3.6 metres. KS just made it up a month ago with an inch to spare over the radar arch. OF has no problems as the Broom's radar arch hinges down.

And here's Costa Del Derg in the winter with a meet on Boxing Day!
 Nudging out.
 Property with their own pontoons.
 The Clare Hills in front.
 The Clare Hills behind.
 Oh! Hereīs John!
 Iīll beat them to Garrykennedy!
 Almost airborne.
 Tied up again.
 From the other side.
No sign of Stuart! He must be lost!:)
Hey! Arenīt you waiting for Stuart?
They donīt and head for the pub.
Passing the old harbour on the way.
 To confirm. Itīs Garrykennedy harbour.
Oh! Here he is!:wave :wave :wave
He might have raced here but he still has plenty of puff (at the back of the boat!)
 Having a good chin-wag.
"Go Boating now" gives it to them straight!
 Back from the pub.
 Ultra clean specimen!
 Practising for Powerboat Level 6!
Stuart says "But I always berth this way!"
 2 get away.
Noel thinks "Which way did they go?"
 Theyīre gone!
Oh! Here they are! Behind us!
 Pirate attack!:ribster
 Launching!
 Whee!
Stuart looks green as "NiallOFlaherty" gives it wellie!
"Iīm returning this crew member to you! Iīve had enough!"
 Derg.
 Same place.
 Same time.
 Later. Time to go home.

Hi Mike. It's possible to go up the shannon estuary through Limerick city to the inland non-tidal shannon and 180nm north through the SEW waterway into the Erne system in Northern Ireland. The passage includes 4 giant loughs (Derg, Ree, Erne upper and Lower) and numberous smaller loughs. The for giant loughs are more like inland seas than lakes. Derg is 40km long by 16km wide. Generally boats of airdraft of upto 3.5m can do the whole system.
