My answer was seasons, the reason, there are never two days the same on the water and to get to know your own back yard takes years, and being a sad old git I go down to the shore on low tides to see where the sand and gravel bars have moved to.

Not quite as daft as you might think. the journey from Denver Sluice down towards Kings Lynn is narrow, shallow and the sandbanks are continually moving. A friend walked the bank on several occasions at low tide and mapped all the nasty bits....so far he has never hit the bottom...

Good question, I think it took me most of the first season to get rid of the dry mouth syndrome. And yes, I go and look at paces at low tide so I have an idea of what I could hit.
Useful sometimes as I discovered that a nice looking bay near puffin island is a boulder strewn wasteland at low tide.

Funny, I could have given two different replies, but they're both missing. After the first time I helmed a boat, I would have probably replied 'minutes'. Now, after quite some years and miles, I'd rather say 'not yet'.
PS: re. instruction, you used a killer comparison I'm afraid. I can only think of one thing which can possibly beat a good meal, and that's not a boating course!...

Err, for the "Did doing a course or getting some instruction" category you forgot "Never had formal instruction" ....
