Sail Size and nautical terms
      #1859754 - 15/05/2008 13:11

Looking at the broacher of my Swin Ranger Ketch the sail size is described as a number followed by a Delta or PHI symbol (a square with sigma passing through)

Jib 68
Main 110
Mizzen 60

The mast is 23ft Boom 10ft 9ins Mizzen 15ft and mizzen boom 4ft 9ins, try as I may I can not make sense of these numbers.

Can anyone help?
Please
Neil

From the manufacturer's website:

Quote:

Mk.2 Terylene sails 68 sq.ft. foresail, 110 sq.ft. mainsail, 60 sq.ft mizzen.

As for the symbol, wikipedia says:

Quote:

A symbol for square foot, square feet, and “per square foot” commonly used in architecture, real estate and interior space plans is a simple square with a slash through it. It is also occasionally written as a square with a vertical line bisecting it. If your browser is up to it, you may see it here: ⏍

My browser isn't up to it, but it sounds like what you describe.

Square feet looks good to me, taking a bit off the mast and boom lengths gives:-
Main 20.5 X 10.5 divided by 2 = 107 and a bit
Stan

I must type faster

What a clever lot you are, I had reasoned that the main sail was approz 123sq ft if is was a right angle triangle, ommitting the bit missing at the bottom!!!!!
Oh to feel so dumb!
Thanks everone

Bang on with the symbol.

Can I ask what sail makers web site you used for the info?

Thanks

Neil
