Just changed the oil & filter on a mercruiser 350 magnum with remote filter. New seago oil extractor work at treat but when I went to remove remote filter there was still oil in it, anyone advise me where I went wrong. luckily I caught the mess with cloths.
All tips appreciated for next time

If you used a 'dipstick' type oil extractor it will only lift oil from the sump, so what you experienced was normal.

Won't you still get oil in the filter even if you drain via a sump plug or built pump?

Slowly and carefully - with a bucket underneath it with kitchen-roll/old rags in the bottom.

Sounds like you already know!
Catch the spill with cloths as you undo the filter!
Some motors have the filter mounted vertically so it is not a problem, but when horizontal there will be a spill!

You just can't get the oil out of the filter! I hang a plastic bag under my filter to catch the oil that comes out when unscrewing it.

Wrap the filter in a Tesco bag.
Then remove.
Morrisons are no good.
They have 'breather' type holes in em.
I Know
I did an oil change Today!
I used a Vacuum sucker type oil extractor, proper job.
It won't take the oil out the filter though.
When refilling.
After running the eng for a bit.
Check the level.
The filter will 'swallow' some oil.
Let it (the eng) sit for a while then top up, to take care of the oil the filt will hold.

With a disposable filter, pierce the filter underneath with a spike and drain into container before unscrewing. This is particularly effective with filters which are affixed horizontally.

problem with mercruiser remotes are - that they are upside down on the top of the engine

I know a guy that starts the engine for a couple of seconds after the sump is emptied to get the oil out of the filter. Not my recommendation!

It doesn't get any easier than that!, you make a hole in the top with a screwdriver or an awl and leave it for 1/2 an hr to drain down into the sump while you do some other part of the service.

Yep, thats what I do, pierce the filter.
Mine are mounted upside down! Unless I pierce them and let then drain I get about 2 pints of oil everywhere.

Yep - agree - sealed poly bag round the filter works a treat - no spills. Then clean of with a rag. Leave a rag underneath until you get the new one installed - coz you get drips! IMHO - dont punch a hole in filter to drain it - this creates sharp edges which when the filter touches the bag pierce it and cause a mess!... I know...lol Also...dont forget to wet the new sealing ring with a little oil too - when you install the new filter.
