Absolute bl00dy rip off!!
      #1860556 - 15/05/2008 22:37

Last December just minutes before our new to us boat was about to be re-launched in Plymouth, WMP guy told us it would be a good idea to fit shaft anodes cos he's seen some pitting on the shafts. So I rushed down to Mountbatten chandlery and almost fainted when charged about £150 for the 2 x 1.75" anodes. Checked later and they all seemed to be pretty expensive there.

wandered into my local chandlers in Exmouth today and happened to tell him about these expensive anodes, he checked his prices and i now have 4 of the same on order for just over 20 quid each!! MG Duff, no difference except about 1/3 of the price. I hate being ripped off. That's the last time the plymouth chandlery will have any of my money. And Jerry at Dixons in Exmouth will get even more of our dosh. Nice guy and always more than fair with his prices.

Why are you suprised, captive market, especially at mountbatten. Qab has the same problem , big marina, one chandler, big prices.
Its the rules.

That is blOOdy ridiculous.
What are these peeps about?

I had to renew an exhaust elbow for me TAMD30 Volvo.
£550 + Vodca and Tonic.
'List'
£400 + from another supplier.
£350 was the next quote.

£102 + Value added, from a Man in a little booth in Sarfampton boat show!!!

And He's made a profit.

Good contact made in Exmouth.
The Jerry's of the boating world need your support and will be glad of it.
Good stuff.

MBBH looked after my boat all winter, visiting every month, checking the lines, re-adjusting after the storms, taking off the rubbish, running the engine, etc.

Charged my £105 including VAT for the entire winter.

That saved me about £400 costs if I had gone down myself.

They checked the boat after all the big storms without being asked, and did the monthly thing as well.

Im surprised at the anodes, because every other thing I have purchased from them has been very competitive, and all the services from them have been first rate, and carried out to schedule.

Just to be clear, in my experience they provide a good service at a competitive price, and will generally go out of their way to help their good customers. I am a very happy customer.

No connection, just a satisfied customer etc.

Well at least MBBH would not have left the boat with no shaft a

nodes. However I have issues with them on other things.l

That puts a different complection on it PD, next opportunity I will call in and ask why the huge difference between their price and what I paid in Exmouth. Just checked my bank statement and I actually paid £135-98 which is almost exactly 3 times the Exmouth price for the same item.

And I'll post the response, whatever it is, as hopefully there was some sort of mistake.

Mmm, my guess is that the Mountbatten price is not a mistake and they know exactly what they're doing. Anodes tend to be an emergency purchase eg you lift your boat out of the water for a quick mid season pressure wash and you find your anodes shagged. S**t, you need replacements fast whilst the clock is ticking on the hoist crane. Where are you going to go? The nearest chandlery of course and never mind the cost. Maybe the marina staff even get a 'drink' from the chandlery for recommending that the anodes are changed!
I suppose the moral of the story is to know what anodes are fitted to your boat and always carry a spare set

That's exactly what prompted my enquiry with the chandlery in Exmouth.

Well PD I've just phoned them for an up to date price. Good news is they have not gone up. Bad news is that they are still over 3 times more expensive than my friendly Exmouth chandlery.

Still feel as though I've been taken for a ride. But they will be the ultimate losers through having none of my future business.
