Tides on your cellphone
      #1860728 - 16/05/2008 06:05

While trying to get XTide working on my linux system (that's another story ) I found a version for mobile phones. It may not be new to some, but FWIW the app is called muTide. The UK data is restricted compared to the US and other ports, but at first glance it has the standard ports at least.

I am running it on an emulator ( microemulator)while I work out how to install it on my mobile (any ideas?), and it can also be embedded in a webpage:
The screenshot shows the stand-alone emulator app, and the embedded webpage MIDlet

NB This is not a WAP application - the data is sitting in the phone's memory and doesn't require a connection

Excellent. I put it on my phone and it calculated Milford within 3 minutes and 5cm of Easytide. Cheers!

My phone is a nokia 6300. I used the Nokia PC software that came with it, said 'Install application', pointed at the .jar file I downloaded and it was working inside of a minute.

Whilst I am very comfortable with PCs, I'm useless with phones and this is the first time I've ever done this sort of thing. I can't even text properly, so it must be a fairly simple thing to do.

Thanks again.

I'm having a problem downloading this .jar file - I've downloaded the zipped file and extracted it to a new muTide_NF folder.
This folder is then filled with 13 .class files and another Meta-INF folder which contains a tiny MF file....not a sniff of a .jar file anywhere!

After I finally get the .jar file downloaded, I'm going to use the Nokia PC program to load the tide program onto my Nokia 6300 phone - I'm ok with this part (Hopefully!)

What am I doing wrong??? any pointers gratefully received!

Works with Nokia 5310. All I did was load the .jar file onto the phone and clicked on it. No unzipping or anything. worked straight away.

Nor mine!

Blackberry desktop manager doesn't recognise the file format.

I think it will need to be re-compiled to suit.

I think you have downloaded the wrong file:

muTide_NF.jar: all reference stations and derived stations of the harmonics-dwf-20071228-nonfree.tcd data set of XTide
(See station list of this file)
Size of this jar: 132 KB
Download: jad jar

On the web page you need to click on the jar file, I have highlighted it in red.

It works on a SPV 650.

If you have Windows Mobile on your 'phone you can run Belfield Software tideplotter. Lots of UK data (and elsewhere) and it has always worked very well for me (no connection). See Tideplotter
