New M3 sequential is the first BMW twin clutch gear box.

AFAIK VWAudi group protected the technology for two years from launch, hence the other manufacturers now catching up.

Why yawn?

All motor boaters I know love cars. Then they progressed to boats, and one even to having private jets.

I welcome any informed conversation here.

Talking of 5 series, I once had a '78 520. Loved it. Have never driven an M5, though I had a 540 14 years ago. Was stopped on the M3 after a timed mile at 99.84mph average. Don't know much about UK regs, but was told (after him admitting to being a motorhead and asking to look at the engine) that I'd have been relieved of my keys had I been doing 0.14mph more. Sneaky bugger, was in an unmarked Corrado VR6. Camera in the grille and flashing lights in the bottom corners of the windscreen. Display in the glove compartment. Very Bond.

Toys are fun. Especially fast ones.

Um, the towbar redsign and modification (of a BMW original part) was supervised by me and my father, and carried out by a specialist welding firm. My father is a chartered mechanical engineer and I have an honours degree in Mech Eng from Imperial College (which, in case you dont know, is the top engineering university in the Uk and among the dozen ivy league engineering centres in the world). Rest assured, we can make a towbar, or anything else for that matter, better than Towsure or Witter (for starters). "Till it comes apart!" - you'll be waiting a long time :-)

Mike S, here are pics of towbar in case you or a mate are interested. Not much to see in pics cos it is well hidden. The exhausts are separate each side of the car (no big silencer right across the back like the first quad-pipe M3) and the aft silnecers are longitudinal, so not too hard to work around. The swan neck is removable leaving almost nothing showing (except the elec socket which I wanted hidden but my brother wanted it there!). I'll post some more pix of tender delivery later today

Your undisputed acedemic ability does not place you above the law regardless of how silly we might think that it is. Nor does it allow you, it would seem , to appreciate the risks of pulling boat trailers at 90mph!
According to you, BMW do not 'allow' a tow bar on this vehicle, the tow bar is not type approved and you are therefore not legal or insured.
Should, heaven forbid, something happen on the way, like a tyre blow out at 90mph there is a real risk of you causing damage and loss to others.
I do not find this acceptable, may be you do or may be you just had not thought it through.
What do others think?

I think it looks a quality job by someone who clearly now what he is talking about. Yes there is a risk about towing at 90mph but we all take risks everyday, just becuase a goverment has approved a risk does not change the fact that it is a risk.

I was surprised at your use of the word 'illegal' but it seems you are correct.

jfm, thanks for the photos, very useful. Seems to have created somewhat of a 'discussion' though

Intriguing situation. I think that your analysis is indisputable.
On the other hand, I'd also see that as 'acceptable' (note the brackets).
I mean, I wouldn't feel so worried myself in pulling such trailer with such car at 90mph (though I'd probably slow down with a much heavier/bigger boat).
But then again, maybe I'm biased 'cause I'm used to sit in the passenger seat with swmbo launching her smart at 100+mph...
