What caused the paint to come off the chainplate (This is a very new boat - fortunately, not mine)? Apologies for the poor quality of the photo.

metal not prepped properly before painting, possible a hint of grease or silicone left on it

Hi,
Looks like stress from buckling/bending, had any high winds?
Could just be poor pre-treatment of base coat if a new metal. Is there any sign of oxidisation, from the edges where the paint is still attached?
I had a mirror frame go the same way after only 3 months on a new car. Manufacturer’s error.
note to self, lol must type faster.

Both of you are nowhere near the mark.
This is what their fanbelt looked like after the same incident.

Yes, a lighting strike.
The owner was aboard at the time and came rushing out into the cockpit, with eyes like a raped owl. He couldn't string a sentence together for ages - he just mumbled incoherently. Peeps in the pub nearby report that the mast glowed from the heat for quite a while. The stays were blacken with soot like stuff, which washed off after the next rainfall.
The fanbelt is as hard as rock and all the electronics were cooked.

Makes one pleased not to have a metal sticky up bit on the boat!
