Whiffy - but from where
      #1861697 - 16/05/2008 20:13

Just visited my boat and on opening the doors there was a distinct smell of what I can only describe as a strong bilge like smell.
Having checked said bilge was dry and not stinking I focussed on the Jabsco toilet (no header tank by the way) couldn’t see an obvious problem here either i.e no obvious leaks around the toilet itself or pipe work to hull. Where do I look next?

I have seen others comment that it could be a build up of scale / calcium in the pipework/bowl and then on the benefits of flushing the system with White Vinegar .Is this an option? Another hint I’ve picked up is to descale with muriatic acid but where on earth do I get that from in the UK ( its bad enough getting a two packets of asprins fom Boots ) , would diluted cement cleaner ( 30% HCl) from the builders centre be Ok to defur the pipes ?

Before using anything too drastic try flushing the Jabsco with fresh water when leaving the boat for any length of time. Sea/marina water holds plenty of organisms to fester away in the pan and pipes. I normally fill the pan with fresh water, add some "bog standard" cleaning fluid, apply pan brush then flush clear with inlet shut.

Other possibility is waste or stale water in the sink drain pipes. Fit the plugs and see if this stops the smell.

Go easy with the nasty chemicals - they can knacker your seals and other rubber bits in the bog.

I had this when I bought mine at first and its just "stale" seawater in the Jabsco. Went to the chandlery bought some flush cleaner (jabsco) and used a bucket or so of fresh water with this. Flushed away a few times over a week or so and it disapperaed. Now I just add a bit of cleaner after each trip. Works for me.

It's a boat thing. Try all above. The smells soon clear up once your using the boat. Heres another tip. We keep a spray bottle, full of pet deorderent. Smell believe it or not, can get through the pipes. Yes took me a bit to believe it as well. If the bilge gets smelly, it gets a spray of the pet stuff. All ok again for quite q while.

Me too - we keep a squirty bottle of the pet clean-up spray onboard after suffering with whiffy pipes. It really does work.

Pleased to say we haven't needed to use it for over two years since flushing the bog with fresh water only.

I have the 'Remedy'
Usually works.
I will lob a bit over, next time I,m on the Pontoon.
If it doesn't work, no matter.
Just roll it in a fag paper.
Light and sit back.
Aromers will disappear.
The sea will seem flat.
Your davits will shrink.
Folks wp 1234 has Davits that make The Forth Bridge look miniscule.
Just keep Downwind till yer fix it!
