thanks everyone for all the useful ideas regarding the mess-free removal of the oil filter, so my next question is how do I get the small spillage of oil out of the bilge, I am thinking of using my oil extractor (vacuum) to lift water/oil out but dont want scum marks ?
ps not much access under engine & only 100mm at front

I find disposable nappies are good for this.

Yes nappies are useful. Also get some Bilgex, cleans bilges up a treat and leaves them fresh smelling.

Go to a good trade motor factors and get a pack of oilsorb mats. Cost about £12 for a pack of 25 mats of around 400 x 400mm.
They absorb only oil and leave the water behind for you to pump out normally.
I use them to line my bilge in case I get an oil leak

You can wash the mats and reuse them.
I scrounged a quantity from a nice EA man to mop up some diesel, left the pad to drain and washed it by hand.
Amazing came up as good as new.
Wasn't being a cheapskate, had about a gallon to remove from a ditch, and had to reuse the pads. Wasn't my spill either...
