Boat renaming ceremony: Hangover cure required !!
      #1862105 - 17/05/2008 11:30

Well the deed has been done. At 1800 yesterday we had 22 people on the deck, including the lady vicar. She had prepared a lovely, yet brief, blessing ceremony which involved a couple of poems, one short bible reading, and three opportunites to slurp champagne.

SWMBO had to pour some over the bow before anybody could drink any.

The whole thing took only about 15 minutes. An hour later, there were 8 empty champagne bottles !! THen we went to a barbecue in the sailing club, involving copious red wine. Needless to say, I am feeling a little under the weather today, but at least will be out on the water after lunch

So all in all, it was a fantastic evening.

Oh , the boat name. For the uninitiated it was previously Lechwe of Salcombe. A lechwe is a type of antelope in southern Africa, mainly Botswana, which elegantly prances around in wetlands. We were not overly inspired by the name when we bought the boat and had several conversations about changing it. We have just had her fully polished - looks almost new - which involved taking the old name off. Also we chose to re-register her as Part1, so it was a good opportunity to change it.

The blessing was agreed between us, to overcome any superstitious negative thoughts.

The new name is Fiddler's Dream. Nothing to do with violins, I hasten to add. It is because I have a reputation for always fiddling around with something, whether it be electronics, mooring lines, or sails, and many more things !!

When we first took the boat over, some very close friends came aboard, and the lady sad "You are going to love this boat Nick - she is a fiddler's dream !!" we immediately knew that was the name for us.

So now Fiddler's Dream, she is.

Now ..... where did I leave those Alka Seltzer ??

Sounds like fun and what a briliant name for a boat.

It's bad luck to be superstitious!

Better change the name on your profile. Another excuse to consume more pop!

Nick.. just a word of caution..
did you turn around 5 times, face Mecca.. then drink to prosperity and world peace...
This HAS to be followed by a bowl of spinach on a square wooden plate.. 1 hour in the hammock with a female leg hung out..
A bottle of rum for the sea gods (Poured into either the water - or yer gut - cant remember which ?)
And then, the finale... a large bulb of garlic hung in the companionway for 6 months....

'Ruddles' was originally called "Lesley Frank II of Hamble".. well, you HAVE to change them sometimes dontcha....

Nice name. Slight echoes of "Day Trip To Bangor", though I think that was Fiddlers' Dram.

God bless her and all who sail, drink, make VHF calls etc. on her.
