Hydrostatic releases generally have a weak link built in. Strong enough to allow inflation when the boat is sinking but weak enough to break rather than allow the raft to be dragged to the depths.

Agreed, but it still requires the boat to sink in water deeper than the painter's length before the raft goes off automatically...

More of an issue in Christchurch Bay where you could sink, stand on the radar arch and still breathe...
