Thames Marinas
      #1862754 - 17/05/2008 21:31

Hi Everyone
I am new to this forum and was rather hoping that you could help me. I am looking for a mooring on the Thames. I dont know the area very well so I could do with some advice.

I am going to visit Bray and Penton Hook tomorrow, so if any one knows anything about those or Windsor and Shepperton it will help me no end.

Many thanks in advance
Dave

Hi Dave and welcome.

Would be useful to know what boat you have and where you live as may have some bearing on options available as well as how easy to get to various marinas etc.

Bray & Windsor Marinas are not very far apart and are located on the same stretch of river between Boveney and Bray locks.

Both are owned by MDL.

Also on the same stretch of river is the Racecourse marina (formerly called Racecourse Yacht Basin). I understand this is now run by Ting Dene.

The area is convenient for cruising to Windsor and Cliveden reach. You can reach Henley in a day from Bray. (or indeed downstream to Penton Hook).

The area is arguably prettier than further downstream. If you moor with MDL who own Bray, Penton Hook & Windsor you can moor in the others as a visitor.

I have found Bray to be very friendly and we enjoy taking part in activities arranged by the Bray Cruiser Club. (I am now in my second year mooring at Bray).

Hope this helps!

I've been at MDL Penton Hook for nearly 16 months. Very friendly bunch of office and pontoon staff. Some more perm residents give it a flavour of "home". Reasonable yacht club attached. Excellent security, and cheap wifi.

a lot depends on where you live and how often you want to get to the boat and how long you want to spend travelling to it. For my money try start at Shepperton for a couple of years, then move up to Penton, then to Bray and so on; refresh your cruising territory. Also - join a club.

Quite agree.

Bray Cruiser Club being a very good example of an excellent, friendly club!

(You don't even have to moor at Bray to join....)

Hi Everyone

Many thanks for the information - I currently live near Brighton and own a 19ft Orkney fishing boat which is currently on a trailer. But the plan is to move to the Heathrow area (moving with my job) and buy a cruiser. So if I can find the right marina and get a berth for my current boat, I can then look for a bigger boat at my leisure.

Thank you
Dave

Hi Dave

I have a fishing boat moored at Shepperton Marina and I fish around the Shepperton area.

I can also recommend the Bray area for fishing. When I was looking for a place to moor I logged on to the different marina websites to get an idea of what they have to offer.

Here are a few links that you might find of use.

Bray - http://www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-bray-marina/home.asp
Shepperton - http://www.sheppertonlink.com/
Penton Hook - http://www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-penton-hook-marina/home.asp

I hope that helps...maybe we could fishing together sometime

Pete
