AVG version 8
      #1870273 - 24/05/2008 17:04

Is it just me, or do others find the latest AVG (free) a bit of a pain?

With the previous version a toolbar icon popped up when a scan started and allowed you to pause or cancel the scan - also showed the scan progress so you knew how long it had to go.

As far as I can see, Version 8 has no such facillities. As it tends to monopolise the computer, even on the lowest priority setting, I find I have to end the task if I have something important to get on with ..... which somewhat defeats the object!
I know I could simply shedule it for the middle of the night, but don't really want to have to leave the computer on.

My scan ran last night and warned me with a pop-up no problem, Vic.

I've no problem with its functionality or performance .... it's just that it has become a bit less user-friendly IMHO (in particular the disappearance of the pause function).

Still, it's free! ..... and I expect if I had something better than a 2.6MHz Celeron I wouldn't notice the performance issue

AVG8 is definitely different, it slows my machine down when it's scanning and the scans take 40 mins longer than last version.

When scan is running if you open AVG you can pause and cancel scan in the same way as before.

Thanks for that. I'll try next time.

My AVG8 seems to have settled down a bit and doesn't seem to slow things down nearly as much, and they have restored the "right click" on AVG icon in notification area so that you can pause or cancel scans with just two clicks as before.

Yes I agree. I got the update yesterday (the one that requires a restart).

Have also just installed the 2008 version of Ad-Aware which seems to have solved problems I was experiencing with the definition updates on the 2007 version. (I had to do an uninstall/reinstall; it didn't like a straight update).
