The forehatch had been levered open and the catches destroyed.
Evenstar is now for sale ( here if you're interested ) so I had mostly emptied her, even so there were tools, lifejackets, flares etc.
But they took nothing and made no mess.....
Apparently they broke into 8 boats and took flares and fire extinguishers, leaving portable electronics behind on other boats.
I need a new hatch but guess I was very lucky.

That's a bummer - but as you say, got off quite lightly.
