Hi folks, I am back again with questions, though things are moving on - yippee!!
I have been looking over a westerly 33, right price band, well equiped, well maintained, only minor work needed (subject to a prof. survey report). The boat ticks all the boxes, but it is the bilge keeled version. Now I know I have been down this road before, but........... The displacement is 6700kgs, good enough, the ballast is 2750kgs which is significantly lower than the fin keeled version. Would any of you kind folks out there have any reservations about taking a bilge keeler down to the south atlantic???? My prejudices seem too many to list; are bilge keelers too 'tender' to do this and should I dismiss this boat which fits in every other way, the westerly 33 and discus is accepted as a solid safe long distance family cruiser, does that still apply to the bilge keel version?
Thanks for your continued patience.

I don't know the Westerly 33 but a mate bought a Discus last year. Great boat but I couldn't believe how exposed the steering position was. It had the high bridgedeck which allowed access into the rear cabin but the result was, in my terms, a very exposed helmsman.
I would not want to go across the Atlantic in his boat, and certainly not down to the south atlantic.
I would prefer a fin keeled 33 to go where you are going, but I've never been there yet so you need an opinion from someone who has.

I have a W33 bilge keel sloop. Never been to the south Atlantic, but I've been out in a genuine F8 wind over tide north of Cherbourg, plus a 60 knot gale in the Med. The boat was fine, although I was a bit shakey. They are immensely strong and tough boats, and the bilge keels don't seem to be a problem in any way. Sent you a pm.

I would guess you would need storm shutters over the cabin windows for starters!
