Is the advice to go around the Ushant TSS or do people cut the corner by sailing inside of it throught the ITZ? All based on the assumption of decent weather of course. In a blow, westing it would be.

I've always gone round Ushant partly to keep more clear of shipping, partly to ensure I'm West enough in case of surprise weather and partly I because it's suited the wind direction at the time.

Last time I went through the ITZ thus saving a fair bit of distance. You need the right wind for it. We went through with a foul tide as we reckoned we could live with the 2kn indicated on the chart as we were making 8kn. In reality we met 6kn of tide so it was a bit of a struggle.

I usually go outside ushant but inside the tss and its been fine. If the tide is against but the weather is good take the passage de fromveur to get the counter current. its incredible; 5 kts with you instead of 6 against. often a bit lumpy though.

If you've got the time, Ushant is a great island, with two harbours, and well worth a short stop.
