Not sure but many have died going for a swim when the river has been calm .

September last at Penton, chap jumped in after his dog. Dog climbed out, he didn't.
Most of the fatalities have been around the weirs - 3 just at Penton on either yellow or red boards.

Your topic is entitled "shipwrecks". You then ask how many people have perished.
No doubt you will say I am being pedantic, but ships can be wrecked without loss of life.
I am sure many boats have been swept onto weirs or suffered other plights as a result of being caught out in severe river conditions, or navigated badly by people inexperienced in the ways of the river.
The Red and Yellow boards sytem is a warning routine and also has specific implications for users of hired cruisers. The boards do not, per se, forbid navigation, indeed the lock-keepers will lock you through and, and even give you a small present of a warning card to commemorate your visit

Not strictly a wreck...
This was doing approx 40 knots at the back of Desborough Island. It caused even more chaos when they tried to drag it off as a couple of sailing boats got ensnared in the towline and the clubs commodore went for a swim! A good deal more happened but can't remember it all.

One must assume so. Unbelievable, I know!
