When I was in USA on a quick trip I went to a marine shop and bought a fantastic flag pole, on return to the Uk I put it on with the Red ensign and it looked great.
I was telling my friend in the states how good it was and as a joke they sent the American flag and said fly that its better, so I did [image] [/image]
Have to say flying both looks good, but.
is it ilegal? can I get fined?
You see people flying the pirate flag and thats ok.
Thanks

I am looking forward to reading the replies from the forum flag police, but I suspect that the ensign reflects the country of boat registration and shows which maritime laws you sail under.
If your boat is not registered, I am not sure how you stand.

Don't think you'll get fined, nor have you anything to worry about as far as the forum ensign police are concerned, but I suspect you'r not moored too close to any "extreme" mosques or in a taliban area

I think you are okay - an 1890 amendment to The Queen's Regulations permitted any colonial merchant vessel to carry "a distinguishing flag with the badge of the colony thereon in addition to the Red Ensign."
Not sure your American friend would agree

The normal etiquette is to only fly a courtesy ensign of the country you are visiting - usually in an inferior position to the ensign. As you are not in America, this does not apply. The difficulty is that the laws were designed to combat piracy, where vessels purported to be from a different country than they actually were in order to get close to an unsuspecting victim prior to attack.
So although you may be subject to a £500 fine & confiscation of the offending ensign, it would take a very officious official to "arrest" you. The ensign is intended to show the country of origin of the vessel, or possibly its owner when aboard. However, you may fly "House flags" of any description provided they are not easily confused with the correct ensign.
So, while it is unlikely that anyone will "arrest" you, most will either think "that looks pretty" or "that prat doesn't understand Flag etiquette". It's your choice which group you wish to pander to!

is it his and hers sides of the boat perhaps?
Port side on ours is Y DDraig Gogch(galley), Stbd St George(lower helm posn.)
The scale model Offa's Dyke down the middle can make tacking harder, also the dual language signs everywhere on the port side.
