Which charge controller?
      #1905357 - 24/06/2008 10:41

Hi Guys

A few weeks ago I posted a question re a Rutland wind charger controller which was shot. After much correspondence with Marlec it seems like i will have to bite the bullet and replace.

So do I go with the updated Marlec controller or has anybody got a better idea? As always budget is an issue, unforunately.

All thoughts and opinions are as always well received and my thanks in advance.

After 3 months or so use, i have had no problems with the little HRSI controller on my 913. Seems to control the genny better on windy days.
BUT i have split my charging system using a morningstar for Solar.
The hrsi has only a single output, input for wind and input for solar. not sure of the full specs but am sure they will be on the marlec site.
Still wish i'd bought a 3rd panel instead of wind genny for here in the med.
Regards
Roy

We have the HRDX controller which takes the 913 and upto 100W of solar.

Seems good and it split charges to two battery banks.

Apparently its not the most efficient solar regulator out there, but we regularly see 3 or 4 amps out of our 85W panel even covered in dust in NW England!

With the gales last weekend we saw 17 amps from the 913 whilst transmitting on the SSB - it was putting in more power than we could use even with the SSB on Tx!! There is a 20 amp fuse in the HRDX, so must have been very close to blowing it - mind you it was 67 mph winds!!

I can only echo Jonny's comments. We have a 913 and 2 x 85 watt solar panels, all mounted on astern arch. The 913 is connected through the HRDX but the panels, because they exceed the 100 watt solar input limit the HRDX can support they are routed through a second regulator - also supplied by Marlec.

The system works well and I have been delighted both with the products and the pre and post sales service provided by Marlec.

We are currently in the Balearics and the input from the panels dwarfs the 913, but that said the 913 does it bit once the wind speed gets up to 10 knots or so.

We don't have a charge controller on our wind generator. We just watch the battery monitor and switch it off if necessary.

Ditto with KellsEye, we have a KISS and they recomend not using a controller as they tend to reduce input to the batteries. I just turn it off when the batteris are fully charged. Admittedly the KISS can be turnned off not sure about the Rutland.

any thanks to all of you for your thoughts. Sorry I have not thanked you before but have lost our internet connection until today. I think the HRDX has it then.

Once again thanks to all.

Actually when I said we turn ours off we have an on/off switch on the positive feed to the battery. We just turn that off. Maybe need to check if that may cause damage but it's no problem with an Ampair.

I have heard of charge controllers that can accept a solar panel input as well as wind but can't find the product at present in the UK - here's the US version
