I recently dug out an unread book from my locker liberary `Always a distant anchorage` by Hal Roth. A beautiful read it is. I was wondering when the voyage described by Hal Roth in the book was undertaken, the book being printed in 1988. Are Hal and Margaret Roth still around the phots in the book look quite old I`d say 60s

fair wind to all

Hal wrote another book called 'How to Sail Around the World' - another excellent book. In it he has the history of his boats - can't remember them all off hand, their first boat was built in the 70's (ish), but their latest boat was built for them in the 90's if I recall right.

A quick Google reveals he was born in 1927. The latest of his books, that I can see is not yet released - Handling Storms at Sea - due for release in Oct 2008 - so assume he's still around (unless its a re-release of an older book).

"After 50,000 Miles" (1978) is possibly the book that Hal Roth is most famed for writing by ocean sailors. He's a great instructional read; a highly accomplished yachtsman but with modest, understated style. I don't know the voyage (assuming it singular) to which you refer. His options would be legion. An earlier book was "Two on a Big Ocean".

I've just read Hal Roth's flycover description on "After 50,000 Miles" - "I have written this book for people who want to cross oceans, who hope to make extended blue-water passages and to live aboard small sailing vessels for long periods." Think I'll pour a few tonight and have another read!

Very good reading; a bit "good old fashion" style - should be interesting for "designer-yacht" owners... 0=))
Really love the chapter about provisioning and cooking - "Margareth uses...", " Margareth's recipe is", "Margareth says..." and so on....!
