Is there such a rule as to what size nav lights need to be ?

I'm trying to remember if i need one atall . If i have the Port and Stbd on a duo light was it no steaming light needed for a craft of a certain size or was it an all rounder will do as steaming and stern  I cant even remember where i read all this up many moons ago

On your boat, an all rounder will do as both steaming and stern.
If you do a google for 'navigation lights for small boats' you will find lots of info and many chandlers quote the regs as part of the specs.

I would guess that ANY nav light available would meet the visibilty minimum for your boat so just go buy what pleases you !

Rule 22
Visibility of lights
The lights prescribed in these Rules shall have an intensity as specified in Section 8 of Annex I to these Regulations so as to be visible at the following minimum ranges:
(c) In vessels of less than 12 metres in length:
-a masthead light, 2 miles;
-a sidelight, 1 mile;
-a sternlight, 2 miles;
-a towing light, 2 miles;
-a white, red, green or yellow all-round light, 2 miles.
Rule 23
Power-driven vessels underway
(a) A power-driven vessel underway shall exhibit:
(i) a masthead light forward;
(ii) a second masthead light abaft of and higher than the forward one; except that a vessel of less than 50 metres in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such light but may do so;
(iii) sidelights;
(iv) a sternlight.
(b) An air-cushion vessel when operating in the non-displacement mode shall, in addition to the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule, exhibit an all-round flashing yellow light.
(c)
(i) A power-driven vessel of less than 12 metres in length may in lieu of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule exhibit an all-round white light and sidelights;
(ii) a power-driven vessel of less than 7 metres in length whose maximum speed does not exceed 7 knots may in lieu of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule exhibit an all-round white light and shall, if practicable, also exhibit sidelights;
(iii) the masthead light or all-round white light on a power-driven vessel of less than 12 metres in length may be displaced from the fore and aft centreline of the vessel if centreline fitting is not practicable, provided that the sidelights are combined in one lantern which shall be carried on the fore and aft centreline of the vessel or located as nearly as practicable in the same fore and aft line as the masthead light or the all-round white light.

Isn't there a ruling on how many Lumins (or whatever they are called) must emit. From vague memory a minimum of 25 watts for a boat the size of yours Tony.

8. Intensity of lights
(a) The minimum liminous intensity of lights shall be calculated by using the formula;
I= 3.43 × 106× T × D2× K-D
where I is luminous intensity in candelas under service conditions,
T is threshold factor 2 × 10-7 lux,
D is range of visibility (luminous range) of the light in nautical miles,
K is atmospheric transmissivity.
For prescribed lights the value of K shall be 0.8, corresponding to a meteorological visibility of approximately 13 nautical miles.

River inspectors are never up that late, so you're not likely to be stopped, so to my mind as long as any light can be seen at 200 yds range will do?

I was thinking today , it's quite odd with the amount of new members that work for the EA that have joined the forum over the last few months not one of them has bothered to reply . I would have thought it was a question that they would instantly know .

Based on what I had on my old Conquest the smallest ones in the shop should be fine.
Remember that if you venture onto BW's property they may expect a tunnel light as well. 50% of a pair of car foglights covers that one nicely.
While we are on nav lights, anyone any idea if the filters are possible spare parts? Some life form has abstracted my starboard one and making a matching pair means 2 x lights otherwise, at an apparent £40 each or thereabouts.
