Oilies
      #1906720 - 25/06/2008 10:22

Having sailed dinghies all my life it's been shorts, T-shirts and wetsuits... Now I'm getting into some keelboating I guess I ought to get my hands on a set of oilies.

They want to be breathable as otherwise you might as well not bother, but I don't want to spend ridiculous money on the Nasa endorsed Titanium Nitrate injection type stuff you see advertised!

What should I get, where from and how much? Advice appreciated!

Robin

Aldi or Lidl usually do a cheap set at this time of year but I haven't seen any adverts yet. E bay for either last years model or second hand. Best time of year is usually spring when many of the chandlers sell off last years oilies at half price.

Try Force4 or Decathlon, depending on the nearest.

Keep the shorts as you can still use them for posing in the Anchor wearing your boots.

You'll find that you will need to replace 2 layer breathables after a few years. The three layer variety seems to last longer but costs an arm and a leg.

Bought an Aldi jacket as a spare. Used it recently and found zip uncooperative which got frustrating over several long days. Are you near any of the outlet centres ? Hellys had one at Ashford which has now moved - good buys in there.

Simple by the best you can afford. My Mustos lasted 21 years before the bottoms needed replacing.

I bought some Jag breathable trousers.
Excellent value and well made.
Would have bought the jacket but they had limited stock and not my size at the time so bought a seconds Musto top.
Pleased with both.
just google for Jag wetsuits.
