I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that the USB cable supplied with the Garmin unit is suitable for linking to chartplotter software. The cable will work with the Garmin Mapsource software. I bought one of these from GPSBITZ which allows me to link my Garmin GPS Map60CS to my PC via a serial port...........however, I also had to buy one of these to link to my laptop which doesn't have a serial port. There might be other ways of doing it, but that certainly allowed me to connect up to the SeaPro light chartplotter. I have no links with GPSBITZ, just a happy customer. Give them a ring for advice.

I have a GPSMAP76 but it only seems to work with the Garmin Mapsource software. I also have a cheap GPS Mouse I use with Tsunamis99 or Mapsource & Bluecharts to turn my PC into a chartplotter.
Keep an eye on e-bay for cheap versions of the s/w. There's always a risk that it's dodgy tho'; you need to be a little cautious.
