In July's MBM, we debated the merits of marine LPG.
One one side we had Dr Walter Scott, an LPG enthusiast who believes the fuel to have a bright future, and on the other was MBM's practicals editor Neale, who said that supply and reliability were two big issues holding the fuel back.
What do you think? Is LPG really a viable alternative to both petrol and diesel?
As ever, the results will be printed in an upcoming issue of MBM.

This is one debate which keeps coming up for I don't know how many years.
In 2001 I re-engined to diesels rather than convert to gas due to the worry of supply. I made a good choice because my marina had the LPG removed which would've made it impossible to refill on the east coast. Bradwell had it but that was miles away.

I've had a twin 5ltr engined LPG powered boat. If the fuel was readily available and if there were assurances that it would remain cheap I would have another. I had zero problems and all the benefit of cheap running compared to petrol. This was 7 years ago when LPG was available along the south coast.

Of course it will be a viable fuel, @50p ish a litre, untill enough people change over to it and then the Ali Gordy Show will tax it out of reach the same as everything they touch.

I have been saying this for years. I'd like to be wrong.

Yes is the answer, that's my vote, however, only if it's available readily, and it isn't, so it's not viable!
Sorry to be a pain, it's clearly not viable based on the number of marinas/places you can refuel. Take that out of the equation and it's a no brainer! T

I think what you have here is a Chicken and Egg situation.
Users are reluctant to spend the money installing the system without the guarantee of a decent refuelling network, while suppliers are reluctant to develope a netwrok without an existing customer base to repay their investment.
I think it will need a big combined push to become viable, such as a couple of boat manufacturers offering lPG boats from new, and supporting a small network to get things going.
Unfortunatly, I cant see this happening so we are back to what comes first, the Chicken or the Egg?

Agree completely, if it ever becomes popular enough, and therefore widely available enough, to be practical for a cruising mobo, then it will be taxed at the same levels as petrol / diesel.
