We manage with two, to moor to a pontoon, then add another later, four if leaving the boat longer, or if iffy weaather.
But one at the front and another at the back of a more or less flat sided boat, is all thats needed. No it's not a troll.

we have two biguns at the back permanently attached that just sit in the cockpit while on the move. Two mobile per side Two biguns on the bow P&S that sit on the deck held with shock cord cleats while on the move.
One really bigun that is for moving to point of impact that lives in anchor locker. thats 9 in use.
the berth has 3 big dock fenders 8 little dock fenders 2 really really big fenders to rear
And when it is windy I have two Avon inflatable fenders, similar to the ones you see on aircraft carriers
If you want to boat most weekends, you dont just need a good hull for the waves you need protection from gusts of wind and afternoon sea breezes, not to mention the odd social beer or two .
All have matching fender socks too
nearly forgot, I have two cute little fenders for the Zodiac too
27 in total which includes one in the back locker for keeping us off the dock fenders while away.
Helps keeps swmbo fit and out the way when I am concentrating

Car tyres are indeed very good, especially when the River is in flood, I had 12 0n my last berth, they do leave black marks so you still need a few fenders say 6 per side

It depends where you moor. On my trot mooring I don't need any. On the Slate quay I use two 24" balloons plus a couple of 12" ones to supplement. If I think I'm going to have someone raft up on me I add another 4 large sausages on the outside.

With that much protection to be honest I have no idea whether we hit or not, even at ramming speed we would just genitally stop
Its a tricky berth to get off and I need to power off the bow.
Its a real comfort when its blowing 7s and 8s that I dont have to worry about the berthing.
How many times have you been at anchor with friends polishing off a case of bubbly when swmbo waits for it to get dark before she decides she needs 240v and a shop.............finger berth with two fenders in the dark

SWMBO will kill me for this. Apparently, this is to how to hold fenders at speed:

p.s. thought I would add a wake shot for voyeurs

No I'm talking normal. Say a pontoon in the river. Debs many of times asks if two's enough. Well yes it is, front ends off six inch and so is the back, middle cant hit, less it bends!! So, not fingers obviosly, then you need all six. But two or three is fine mostly, usually leave the boat with four down the pontoon, incase some are lost or jump above the pontoon, Never seen a problem in 20 years.
Ha, Ha. Post script. \they do this, then tie up with bits of string.
