We manage with two, to moor to a pontoon, then add another later, four if leaving the boat longer, or if iffy weaather.
But one at the front and another at the back of a more or less flat sided boat, is all thats needed. No it's not a troll.

we have two biguns at the back permanently attached that just sit in the cockpit while on the move. Two mobile per side Two biguns on the bow P&S that sit on the deck held with shock cord cleats while on the move.
One really bigun that is for moving to point of impact that lives in anchor locker. thats 9 in use.
the berth has 3 big dock fenders 8 little dock fenders 2 really really big fenders to rear
And when it is windy I have two Avon inflatable fenders, similar to the ones you see on aircraft carriers
If you want to boat most weekends, you dont just need a good hull for the waves you need protection from gusts of wind and afternoon sea breezes, not to mention the odd social beer or two .
All have matching fender socks too
nearly forgot, I have two cute little fenders for the Zodiac too
27 in total which includes one in the back locker for keeping us off the dock fenders while away.
Helps keeps swmbo fit and out the way when I am concentrating

Car tyres are indeed very good, especially when the River is in flood, I had 12 0n my last berth, they do leave black marks so you still need a few fenders say 6 per side

It depends where you moor. On my trot mooring I don't need any. On the Slate quay I use two 24" balloons plus a couple of 12" ones to supplement. If I think I'm going to have someone raft up on me I add another 4 large sausages on the outside.

With that much protection to be honest I have no idea whether we hit or not, even at ramming speed we would just genitally stop
Its a tricky berth to get off and I need to power off the bow.
Its a real comfort when its blowing 7s and 8s that I dont have to worry about the berthing.
How many times have you been at anchor with friends polishing off a case of bubbly when swmbo waits for it to get dark before she decides she needs 240v and a shop.............finger berth with two fenders in the dark

SWMBO will kill me for this. Apparently, this is to how to hold fenders at speed:

p.s. thought I would add a wake shot for voyeurs

No I'm talking normal. Say a pontoon in the river. Debs many of times asks if two's enough. Well yes it is, front ends off six inch and so is the back, middle cant hit, less it bends!! So, not fingers obviosly, then you need all six. But two or three is fine mostly, usually leave the boat with four down the pontoon, incase some are lost or jump above the pontoon, Never seen a problem in 20 years.
Ha, Ha. Post script. \they do this, then tie up with bits of string.

I recognise that. It's a Ferretti, innit. Which model and what's the wire that comes down from the flybridge (in your cockpit pic)?

I noted the VENTURA when in Stravanger only had 2 fenders and she is nearly 1000ft long.

Nothing more useless on a boat than a fender in the locker, when it's needed on the topsides.

Haven't you answered your own question, it's in case they fall off, or ride up on top of the pontoon. I suppose on a river or sheltered marina if you can guarantee no swell or wash then 2 is fine, but in harbours or less sheltered marinas, i'd want 4. Anyway, you need more for when you leave the boat, so if you have 'em on board you may as well use 'em, as it don't take long to put a couple of extra fenders out.

Sorry but glad not to be Mrs Daka , don't mind front & back fenders, its the middle one that a right pain to tie on, can't hold on and tie a know unless its dead calm.
So once we have got off I tie the middle one on from the pontoon. Much easier.
Recent yottie rafted onto us cheekily swapped my slip knots for "pick knots!", & a right pain they were to pick off ! Hell on your nails !

I think that two should be fine if you know the berth and know it is long enough so both fenders will make contact with the pontoon. In dodgy weather (wind/tide) even then it might not be guaranteed that you will be able to get the entire boat into the berth before contact. Also in unfamiliar berthing situations again you might not always be able to get it to berth exactly as you want to.
In spite of photos that have appeared on the forum to the contrary (where I had 8 out on a 21ft boat ) I always want 4. It covers for most eventualities then and if one misses or rides up then you are still generally safe.
If it is windy or there is a strong tide running I put them out the other side too, generally higher, on the rub-strip. Then, if I miss my berth and get blown onto the boat in the berth next door, no harm is done and no panic necessary... just gently lean on the fenders, walk ashore with ropes and rope her in. Again, I use 4 that side too (hence the need for 8 in total!!! ).
No obsession really but no one wants a damaged boat from a parking mistake when a fender can prevent it.

Yup, agreed hlb, 2 is fine if mooring to a striaght quai. Often 3 get stuck on my boat, but I agree you only need 2. I only have 10 fenders (6 big 4 small) on the boat and don't see the need for more. I can't believe Daka's 27 on a 33 footer!
Mike the curly wire looks like the cable for the (not tidied away) remote for the flybr crane. That's a big ferretti, a 68 or a 76 or 830 or something. Beautiful boats but possibly the worst flybr dashboards in production today :-)

It's Debs that's got us down to two, hates standing on the side deck fastening them, does it if she has to though.. With the amount of fenders I buy, I should have about 97, but some how I still have two 20 year old ones and another 5. Only ever used four max in Plymouth, alongside berth with a liveaboard next door, that never moved. Need a few more in Conwy though. Got one of Kwackers apprentices next door.

Yup, agree with that and have said before on this forum that Ferretti helms, both the helm itself and the seat are generally crap. For a prime example try the fly helm seat on the new 510 which is a £1m+ boat. For the life of me I cannot understand this because the rest of the boat is designed and built to a v high standard. I can only think that Italian builders have a mentality which assumes that the hired skipper is going to be driving the boat so no need to make him comfy or bother with ergonomics. There's also this Ferretti thing of styling the flybridge to reduce apparent height which means that the seating and mouldings are low It's the one major criticism of my boat that I have. The rest of it is v good so much so that my next boat will very likely be another Ferretti
